The Secret I Kept From You
[Part 2: Moonlight Mansion]
Today had been another usual but busy day. Hinata worked in the school library whole day, skipped all his classes just to get that difficult project done. He was assigned in a group at first, and should be finishing the work together with Souda and Mitarai. But Souda had had an accident, and was lying in the hospital now. At the same time, Mitarai had had an emotional breakdown (yet again). So Hinata had no choice but to do all the work alone. It was painful, but it was over now. Hinata handed in the work after school on time and headed home straight away. He also skipped lunch, and was very hungry at the moment.
When Hinata got back to the Moonlight Mansion, it was pretty late. His other home was located in the city, but not this one: his real home. The one he grew up in. His grandparents were living in here now, and Hinata liked coming back to visit every once in a while. The Moonlight Mansion was the real in which he could truly relax. And none of his classmates knew about this place, Hinata could enjoy a night alone by himself when he wanted to. It was amazing.
The sitting room was empty when he walked in. His grandparents must be sleeping already. They always sleep early. Hinata went straight to his room to get change, and then headed down to look for food in the fridge. There was potato salad in it. Yum. If only there was some orange juice too... oh yeah, here it is. Hinata took all that he wanted and closed the fridges door. Now he could really enjoy a quiet night with this little lovely dinner. There had been a lot happening lately, the party being one of them. It was then Hinata discovered Nanami's love preference. He had to spend some time to think things over.
He thought of Nanami, thought of her soft pink hair and warm smile, but it was shattered now. Nanami was in love with some girl, but definitely not him. He tried to be strong back in the party, not letting her to notice anything. What did she tell him back then? Something about 'a friendly hug' and 'polite response'? Bullshit. Nanami was clearly fooling him. She gave him the wrong signals on purpose. And he really thought she was ready to start a relationship with him at that time. Just how stupid could I be!?
Hinata soon emptied the cup. He had drank up all the orange juice in the fridge. There was only grape juice left, which sucked. Hinata was going out to buy some, but noticed it had started to rain really hard. Did he want to go out in such weather? No, he didn't think so. Hinata signed. It seemed to him that the whole world was against him right now. Nanami...
A warm smile appeared in his mind in a flesh. It was a subtle, genuine one from a beautiful face. Hinata was distracted for a moment. The smile belonged to Komaeda, the 'creepy freak' in class according to Saionji. Remembering the smile Hinata felt a sudden warmth in his chest. He had been talking a bit with the albino, and had suggested them making friends. Komaeda looked kind enough to trust, but he didn't really know a lot about him. What had he done to be referred as 'creepy'? Like talking to himself? But that's exactly what I'm doing right now... Now Hinata found himself longing for orange juice, Nanami and more about Komaeda. He couldn't even remember his new friend's first name. Shit, what is it... What is...
There was a knocking at the door. Hinata looked in amazement. Who'd come this far in this stormy weather? He slowly walked to the door. Maybe it was one of grands' friends.
A white fleshed across his eyes, and a pair of glowing grey beamed. Hinata stood there with his mind blank. It was Komaeda, in his front portal. All soaked. Speaking of the devil... 'Komaeda! What are you doing here at this hour of time!? You looked terrible!' 'Hinata kun!' Komaeda looked shocked too. 'You live here!? I was just finding a shelter from the rain. It was pouring outside...' 'Come on in! We can talk later.' Hinata waved him in. Komaeda was dripping all over. 'You can take a shower here. I can lend some of my clothes to you. What'd you think?' Hinata suggested casually. Komaeda blushed somehow. He was still taking his time for this whole friendship thing to sink in. 'Yes, please.' He said a moment later. And Hinata went to his room to fetch some home clothing.
The bath tub of the Moonlight Mansion was extremely comfortable in Hinata's opinion. He didn't know if Komaeda had ever seen a bathroom that big and luxurious like his. The bathroom was the second best place in the mansion except for his own room. It got an earthly colour that Hinata liked. He also liked fleshy colours, but not as so in this home. But it was all fleshy in his other home. Hinata felt lucky to have two homes, while waiting on the sofa for Komaeda to take his time. He could hear the rushing sound of water, and could imagine the mist filling up all the spaces and made the bathroom very dream like.
Komaeda looked a bit too tall for his clothes, which showed a little of his wrist. His skin was so pale as if it had never been exposed under the sun. How could someone manage THAT? When Hinata noticed he'd been staring (yet again), his face went pink and he smiled awkwardly at the albino. Komaeda smiled back at him, and Hinata had the urge to hit his head on the table hard from the beauty shock. 'Thank you for the shower, and these clothes you lent me, Hinata kun.' Komaeda said softly, his eyes coloured with gratitude. 'Such kindness I would edge in my heart and never forget.' 'It's all right, Komaeda.' Hinata replied. 'This is what friends do.' And Komaeda had the urge to bump his head hard on the table to avoid a friendship shock. Hinata kun had been more than awesome so far. He was the kindest person he'd ever seen. Not that he knew Hinata was thinking of the same thing.
'So what do we do now, Hinata kun?' Komaeda asked a bit nervously. 'I don't know.' Said the brunette. 'Are you tired?' 'A little bit,' Komaeda said honestly. 'But I can hang out for some time.' A grin fleshed across Hinata's face. The last thing he wanted was to be on his own again thinking stupid things about Nanami. Komaeda could be a good distraction. But, to be honest, Hinata wanted to get to know more about the albino. Komaeda had been very interesting to him.
'So... do you want to play some monopoly?' Hinata suggested, and Komaeda laughed. 'I want to play cards. I always win at board games. Cards are more unpredictable for me. So many can happen in a game.' 'Are you always that lucky?' Hinata asked in amazement. I mean, the "unavoidable victory" in board games? Sounds super cool to me.' 'Well, it ruins the fun if you ask me.' Komaeda said bitterly. Hinata liked his expression while the albino was being subtle about his feelings. Emotions were the best indication for one's heart. And just now the bitterness in Komaeda's voice showed that he had the heart of disappointment just like everyone else. He felt good about happy things, and sad about unhappy events. Why was everyone acting so harsh at him? Komaeda's got the right feelings after all, and it went a long way.
But the albino recovered super fast. 'So, card games?' He suggested, but Hinata shook his head. 'Show me your luck, and we'll play cards later. I want to see what it's like.' Komaeda beamed at him, though what he said was: 'But it's boring. Just winning like normal winnings. You sure you want to spend your time on things like that?' 'It's okay, Ko, just show me.' And upon hearing his name Komaeda blushed furiously while Hinata went, remembered something, and took his UNO. He'd lent his monopoly game to Souda earlier, and hadn't got it back yet. Well, UNO would serve the same purpose anyway.
'You okay?' Hinata asked carefully, watching Komaeda blushing like crazy upon seeing him back. 'It...'s nothing.' Komaeda muttered. Hinata smiled at him. Was Komaeda always this shy? What was he feeling embarrassed about? (It's you, Hinata kun. If only you knew. This friendship was more intimidating than I thought. It was too good, made me want to run away from it somehow. I didn't know why.)
They sat down on the floor distributing the cards. Then it started. First it was a normal game. And Komaeda won. Then it happened again. Komaeda won. Then the third round. Komaeda happened to possess every specified colour. On the forth round, Hinata changed his mentioned colour from red to yellow, and then changed to blue in the last minute. To his surprise, Komaeda's last card was a blue. He darted it out. 'Will it be enough?' Said Komaeda, observing Hinata's face. 'Two more rounds.' Hinata replied. He didn't believe it was luck. It was coincidence. And coincidences end. He was amazed that Komaeda didn't have to pick a single card in this round, and in the fifth he seemed to have processed infinite draw two cards. Hinata exploded. He didn't buy that. Not one bit. How on earth could this happen!?
'One more round!' He shouted, and Komaeda gazed. They shuffled the card, and this time beat him when he was on his last card, like an absolutely normal winning. But it was no normal winning. It was the seventh winning tonight. He must have cheated. But how could one cheat on UNO?
'One more round!' Hinata commanded, and they shuffled cards. This time Komaeda got all the cards with the same number in his hands, and he threw them out all at once and the game ended. It was insane. It was NOT REAL! 'Komaeda!' Hinata suddenly bursted out, locking Komaeda's eye with his own. 'What... Hinata kun?' Komaeda asked, worried that he'd upset his new friend with his stupid luck. 'What was your record?' 'Record for what?' Komaeda looked at his amber eyes. His head slightly dropped with inconfidence. 'For winning board games.' 'I haven't count.' Said Komaeda. 'Like all the games I participate in, I recall.' 'Not a single time you'd lost?' Asked Hinata, still with his fierce gaze. 'There was once...' Komaeda was thinking hard. 'When I was forced to leave a game because I felt too faint to continue. Does that count as "lost"?' Hinata signed. 'No, that doesn't, if you ask me.' He said slowly. 'Which means you never lost in this luck depending game. Not ONE SINGLE TIME.' 'What do you think about that?' Asked Komaeda timidly. He was afraid the answer would break this too good to be true friendship. He just didn't expect it to happen so soon. Hinata looked at him. Komaeda looked beautiful even when he was feeling unsure. His grey eyes were glowing above the cards.
'I think...' Hinata began. 'It must be hard for you to possess such special ability. It comes with a price, you know? Sometimes what we called luck is not random to you, while it is to all of us others. You'd just wanted to scream and get rid of it, won't you?' Komaeda wasn't moving an inch. He was stunned. 'For you it isn't luck. It is normality. It is everyday life. Must be painful, finding abnormality to be the reverse, isn't it?' Hinata was looking at him tenderly. His amber eyes soft and understanding. Komaeda was too stunned to utter a word. What was it that this boy was talking about? Luck? Normality? Abnormality? The pain? How did he know of the pain? He haven't even thought about it himself. Sometimes it just ached in the heart, like a thousand pins piercing within. Like walking bare foot on broken glasses. And the loneliness it brought... like living alone in a huge mansion in a crowded city. Like the moon in the sky, surrounded by a million stars. But why? How? How did he know? Was this a prank? Was he making fun of him? If so, why did he show such concern in his eyes? They were the most bewildering, but the kindest things he'd seen in the world. Hajime Hinata. Hajime was the most amazing person he'd ever seen. It must be his luck that drew him to befriend him. Hinata kun intensified the pain. Yet it felt so right having him around, hearing him treating him like one of the others, and his tenderness towards trash like him...
A sudden dizziness filled Komaeda's brain. His heart was bumping so loud that his ears hurt. He wanted to stand up, and walked back to his room. He had a room Hinata kun had prepared for him... The... the world was spinning...
'Komaeda!' was the last word he heard before the world went black. He sensed a soft landing, and then, silence.
